About Chemistry Department

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1993 within the Devrek Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which was founded in 1992, and admitted its first undergraduate students in the 1994-1995 academic year. The department graduated its first students in 1998. In 2005, with a change of name, it continued its educational activities under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Chemistry continues its educational and scientific research activities within the Faculty of Science, which was established by Presidential Decree No. 5868 published in the Official Gazette on July 26, 2022. Since the 1994-1995 Academic Year, the Department of Chemistry has been providing postgraduate and doctoral education under the Institute of Science. 

The language of instruction is Turkish, but students have the option to take English preparatory courses. In order to obtain a bachelor's degree, students must successfully complete all required and elective courses totaling 240 ECTS credits in the program and have a minimum GPA of 2.00 out of 4.00. In addition, students are required to complete two semesters of internship, each consisting of 20 work days, in order to graduate from the Department of Chemistry. Chemistry students have the opportunity to benefit from double major, minor, and international student exchange programs during their studies. 

The Department of Chemistry has 5 divisions: Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. In these divisions, there are a total of 17 full-time academic staff members, including 8 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, and 2 Research Assistants. 

The Chemistry Student Society, a community formed by undergraduate and graduate students, enhances students' interest in chemistry through events organized both on and off campus. The society organizes various activities throughout the year, including inviting guest speakers to campus, visiting different universities and industrial organizations, and arranging some social trips
